The Indian Ocean Coast of Africa

Mozambique is where the Bush & Beach Explorer meets the Indian Ocean. After days of safari in Kruger and a border crossing from South Africa, the coast arrives suddenly: warm water, white sand, dhow sails on the horizon, and a pace of life that makes everything before it feel very far away.
The route covers three stops: a transit night at Xai-Xai for the first taste of the ocean, three nights on the Inhambane peninsula at Barra Beach for swimming, snorkelling, and whale sharks, and a final night in Maputo, one of Africa's most architecturally distinctive capitals, before crossing into Eswatini.
Beaches & Coast
Xai-Xai
The first Indian Ocean stop on the route: a quieter coastal town on the Limpopo estuary with a long beach and views over the surf. Sunset Lodge sits above the dunes. An honest, unhurried introduction to the Mozambique coast after the long drive from Kruger.
Inhambane Peninsula
A long, narrow peninsula of white sand, mangrove channels, and dhow villages, some of the clearest water on the Indian Ocean. The town of Inhambane has Portuguese colonial architecture and a working dhow harbour you can arrive at by sea ferry from Maxixe. Three nights here are the beach chapter of the tour.
Barra Beach
The wide beach south of Inhambane where we stay. Calmer than Tofo, with a long strip of casuarina trees behind the dunes. Excellent for swimming, reef snorkelling, and long beach walks. Sunsets here are considered some of the best on the Mozambique coast.
Tofo Beach
Africa's whale shark capital, a short drive from Barra. Whale sharks gather here in numbers found almost nowhere else on earth, along with manta rays, humpback whales (June to November), and reef systems dense with marine life. Tofo's dive operators have decades of knowledge and a genuine commitment to sustainable marine tourism.
Cities & Culture
Maputo
One of the most architecturally distinctive capitals in Africa: wide tree-lined boulevards, wrought-iron buildings attributed to Gustave Eiffel, colonial-era cafés, and a bay opening to the Indian Ocean. The Mercado Central is one of the great African markets. We arrive in time to explore the city before an overnight stay and the morning drive to Eswatini.
Entry requirements
Passport recommendation
For all POA Safaris trips we recommend travelling with a passport valid for at least 6 months after your trip and containing at least 4 blank pages. Longer multi-country itineraries may need more.

Other vaccinations and malaria
Yellow fever is the only vaccination that can affect entry. Anything else is a health question, and what you need depends on your own vaccination history and where you grew up. See your doctor or a travel clinic a few weeks before you leave, as some courses need more than one dose.
Most of these routes pass through malaria areas. Antimalarial tablets usually have to be started before you arrive, so arrange them at home. Pharmacies in the region do sell them over the counter if you lose yours. Repellent, covered arms after dark and the bed net matter as much as the tablets.
