Visa and entry requirements
What each of the 15 countries we travel through asks of an arriving tourist: whether you need a visa, roughly what it costs, how long your passport has to be valid, and when a yellow fever certificate is checked. Every country links to its own immigration authority, which is the only source that can overrule this page.
Last reviewed September 2026. Requirements change without notice, so treat this as a starting point and confirm against the official links before you book flights.
Country by country
Passport recommendation
For all POA Safaris trips we recommend travelling with a passport valid for at least 6 months after your trip and containing at least 4 blank pages. Longer multi-country itineraries may need more.

Angola
Visa-free for many nationalities- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Citizens of 98 countries are visa-exempt for tourism, up to 30 days per entry and 90 days per calendar year. Others may need a visa or eVisa.EU, UK and US passports: Usually visa-free.
- Typical fee
- Free for many nationalities.

- At least 6 months from entry.
- Yellow fever
- Required for all travellers.
Botswana
Visa-free for many nationalities- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Many are visa-exempt for tourism; others can apply through the Botswana eVisa system.EU, UK and US passports: Usually visa-free.

- Free for many nationalities. From US$30 (BWP 300) if a visa is required.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
DR Congo
Visa required for most visitors- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Most international tourists need a visa or eVisa, and the process is more involved than elsewhere on this list.EU, UK and US passports: Visa required, arrange in advance.
- Typical fee
- From US$390: US$300 for the eVisa plus US$90 for the VAP.
- Yellow fever
- Required for all travellers.
- Good to know
- The visa may be issued at the airport or port on entry, so follow the instructions attached to your eVisa approval.
Eswatini
Visa-free for many nationalities- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Many can enter visa-free for short tourist visits; others need a visa.EU, UK and US passports: Usually visa-free.
- Typical fee
- Free for many nationalities.
- Passport validity
- At least 30 days beyond your intended return date. We recommend 6 months for safari travel.
- Blank pages
- At least 2 blank pages, plus extra pages if you travel through South Africa.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
Kenya
eTA required for most visitors- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Kenya uses an Electronic Travel Authorisation rather than a conventional tourist visa, and a growing list of nationalities is exempt.EU, UK and US passports: An eTA is required before travel.
- Typical fee
- From US$30 for the standard eTA.
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months from arrival.
- Blank pages
- At least 1 blank page.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from or transiting a yellow-fever-risk country.
- Good to know
- The eTA application asks for your passport, a photo, your itinerary, accommodation and payment details.
Lesotho
Visa-free or eVisa depending on nationality- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Many can enter visa-free for short tourist visits.EU, UK and US passports: Usually visa-free.
- Typical fee
- Free for many nationalities.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from or transiting a yellow-fever-risk country.
- Good to know
- Almost everyone arrives through South Africa, so South African entry requirements apply as well.
Malawi
Visa required for many nationalities, with VOA and eVisa options- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Some are visa-exempt, some can obtain a Visa on Arrival, and others need prior authorisation.EU, UK and US passports: Visa usually required, with Visa on Arrival or eVisa options.
- Typical fee
- From US$75 single entry.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
- Good to know
- Visa on Arrival is limited to eligible Category Two nationals.
Mozambique
eTA, visa exemption or eVisa depending on nationality- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Some qualify for visa-exempt or eTA entry; others need an eVisa.EU, UK and US passports: Usually an eTA.
- Typical fee
- Varies by nationality.
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months from entry.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
- Good to know
- The eVisa or eTA application may ask for accommodation confirmation, a return ticket and proof of funds.
Namibia
Visa on Arrival or eVisa for many nationalities- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Many who previously travelled visa-free now need a Visa on Arrival, which can also be applied for online beforehand. Others remain visa-exempt.EU, UK and US passports: Visa required, available on arrival or online in advance.
- Typical fee
- From approx. US$70. The official fee is N$1,200, so the dollar figure moves with the rate.
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months from entry.
- Blank pages
- At least 3 blank pages.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
- Good to know
- A return or onward ticket is required.
Rwanda
Visa on Arrival available to all nationalities- Visa
- Visa on Arrival is available to travellers from every country. Many nationalities also qualify for visa-free entry or fee exemptions.EU, UK and US passports: Visa required, but issued on arrival.
- Typical fee
- From US$50 single entry, or US$70 multiple entry. Some nationalities are exempt from the fee.
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months from entry.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from or transiting a yellow-fever-risk country, which is common on multi-country East African trips.
South Africa
Visa-free for many nationalities- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Many can enter visa-free for tourism; others need a visa in advance.EU, UK and US passports: Usually visa-free.
- Typical fee
- Free for many nationalities.
- Passport validity
- Valid for your intended stay. Airlines may ask for longer validity.
- Blank pages
- At least 2 blank pages.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from or travelling through a yellow-fever-risk country.
- Good to know
- You may be asked for your accommodation or residential address on arrival.
Tanzania
Visa, eVisa or Visa on Arrival depending on nationality- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Many need a tourist visa through the eVisa system or, where eligible, on arrival. Some are visa-exempt, and some need referral approval in advance.EU, UK and US passports: Visa usually required, by eVisa or on arrival.
- Typical fee
- From US$50 for the ordinary visa. Multiple entry is US$100.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from or transiting a yellow-fever-risk country, which is common on multi-country East African trips.
- Country insurance rules
- Zanzibar operates its own mandatory inbound travel-insurance requirement, separate from your own cover. Check it if your trip includes Zanzibar.
- Good to know
- An arrival declaration applies. Immigration may ask for a return ticket and proof of funds.
Uganda
Visa or eVisa required unless visa-exempt- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Those who need a visa should arrange the eVisa online before travelling.EU, UK and US passports: An eVisa is usually required before travel.
- Typical fee
- From US$50 single entry.
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months from entry.
- Yellow fever
- Required for all travellers over 9 months old, and checked at the border. Carry the certificate with you.
- Good to know
- The eVisa application asks for passport details, an itinerary, a photo and accommodation information.
Zambia
Visa-free for many nationalities- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Many are visa-exempt; others can obtain a visa on arrival or an eVisa.EU, UK and US passports: Usually visa-free.
- Typical fee
- Free for many nationalities. Fees apply if you need a visa; the published rates are inconsistent, so check on application.
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months from entry.
- Blank pages
- At least 3 blank pages.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
- Good to know
- Arrivals by air should hold a return ticket.
Zimbabwe
Visa-free, Visa on Arrival or advance visa depending on nationality- Visa
- Depends on nationality. Some are visa-free, many can obtain a Visa on Arrival, and others must arrange a visa in advance.EU, UK and US passports: Usually a Visa on Arrival.
- Typical fee
- From US$30 single entry. Some nationalities pay more, for example US$55 on a British passport.
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months from arrival.
- Yellow fever
- Required if arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
Other vaccinations and malaria
Yellow fever is the only vaccination that can affect entry. Anything else is a health question, and what you need depends on your own vaccination history and where you grew up. See your doctor or a travel clinic a few weeks before you leave, as some courses need more than one dose.
Most of these routes pass through malaria areas. Antimalarial tablets usually have to be started before you arrive, so arrange them at home. Pharmacies in the region do sell them over the counter if you lose yours. Repellent, covered arms after dark and the bed net matter as much as the tablets.
Take your route with you to the appointment, as malaria advice varies by area within a country and not only by country. The CDC publishes yellow fever and malaria guidance country by country. See the CDC guidance.

Visa, vaccination and entry requirements depend on your nationality, travel history and itinerary, and may change without notice. This is a general guide only.
