Kruger National Park

One of Africa's largest and most celebrated game reserves: nearly 20,000 square kilometres of bushveld where Big Five sightings are as close to guaranteed as anywhere on earth. Self-drive through the park on a network of well-maintained roads, or base yourself in one of the exclusive private lodges in the adjacent Sabi Sands, where off-road driving and night safaris bring you closer than the national park allows.

Addo Elephant National Park

A Big Five destination in the Eastern Cape: one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa, a marine section with whale and great white shark sightings, and entirely free of the crowds that follow Kruger. The rare "Big Seven" (including southern right whale and great white shark) can all be encountered within the broader Addo ecosystem, making it one of the most complete wildlife destinations in the country.

Hermanus & the Whale Coast

The best land-based whale watching in the world. From June to November, Southern Right Whales move into Walker Bay to calve, and the clifftop paths above Hermanus bring you close enough to hear them breathe. A dedicated whale crier walks the town announcing sightings with a kelp horn. No boat, no permit, no effort: just extraordinary animals in full view.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park

Africa's oldest proclaimed nature reserve, established in 1895, and one of the greatest conservation success stories on the continent. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi has done more than anywhere else to save the white rhino from extinction: the global population was reduced to under 50 animals here in the 1960s, and the park's Operation Rhino drove the recovery to today's 20,000+. Both white and black rhino can be seen on game drives, alongside lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and wild dog. The rolling green hills of Zululand surrounding the park are a world apart from the flat bushveld of the Lowveld.

Cape Town & Table Mountain

Africa's most celebrated city, and one of the most beautiful on earth. Ascend Table Mountain by cable car or on foot for views across the Cape Peninsula that justify every superlative ever written about this place. Below: the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay beach, and the winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek just 45 minutes away, where Cape Dutch estates produce some of the southern hemisphere's finest wines alongside outstanding farm-to-table restaurants.

Cape Point & Cape of Good Hope

The dramatic southwestern tip of the African continent: towering sandstone cliffs dropping straight into the Atlantic, wild fynbos stretching to every horizon, and the vertiginous Cape Point lighthouse with 180-degree ocean views. Just up the road, Boulders Beach shelters a colony of African penguins who have lived here since 1983 and now number over 3,000, entirely unbothered by the people who come to watch them.

The Garden Route

Africa's most beautiful coastal drive: 300km of lush indigenous forest, golden beaches, and lagoons winding along the southern Cape coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River. Knysna's famous lagoon, the ancient Tsitsikamma forest, the beaches of Plettenberg Bay, and the Bloukrans Bridge (home to the world's highest commercial bungee jump at 216 metres) all fall along the way.

Drakensberg Mountains

The "Dragon's Back", a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches along the eastern escarpment of southern Africa, with peaks rising above 3,000 metres and San rock art panels thousands of years old covering the cave walls below. The Amphitheatre in the northern Drakensberg is one of the great rock faces on earth; Tugela Falls drops 948 metres beside it in five free-falling cascades, making it the second-highest waterfall in the world.

Blyde River Canyon & the Panorama Route

One of the world's largest green canyons: red sandstone walls dropping 800 metres into lush vegetation, with viewpoints at God's Window and the Three Rondavels offering perspectives that no photograph does justice to. The Panorama Route connects all of these in a single scenic drive through the Mpumalanga escarpment, and sits just a few hours from Kruger, making it the natural complement to any safari in the northeast.

Soweto

South Africa's most famous township and the beating heart of the country's liberation story. Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both lived on Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners. The 1976 Soweto Uprising began here; the Hector Pieterson Memorial marks where it turned. A guided tour is not optional if you want to understand modern South Africa: it is the story.

Robben Island

The former maximum-security prison in Table Bay where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in captivity, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most powerful historical visits on the continent. The boat crossing, the lime quarry, the tiny cell: each one lands differently in person than on the page. Guides are former political prisoners, and the tours they give are unlike anything else in Africa.

Durban & the Golden Mile

South Africa's third-largest city and its warmest: year-round Indian Ocean surf, the Golden Mile beachfront, and a unique cultural blend of Zulu, Indian, and British influences that makes Durban unlike anywhere else in the country. The curry here is the best on the continent, a legacy of the indentured Indian labourers who arrived in the 19th century and built a cuisine that has become the city's defining identity.

Johannesburg & the Apartheid Museum

South Africa's largest city and the economic engine of the continent: sprawling, electric, and essential. The Apartheid Museum is one of the most important and thoughtfully designed historical museums in the world, tracing the full arc of apartheid from its legislative foundations to its collapse. Arrive with time; leave with a different understanding of the country you're in.

KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields

One of the most historically significant landscapes in southern Africa: the Zululand hills where the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 was fought and decided. Isandlwana is the defining site: a flat-topped mountain where a Zulu impi of 20,000 warriors overwhelmed a British column of 1,300 on 22 January 1879, killing over 1,300 soldiers in the deadliest defeat the British Army suffered during the colonial era. The Talana Museum near Dundee, the main Anglo-Zulu War memorial, holds weapons, uniforms, photography, and first-hand accounts that make the scale of the conflict concrete. The landscape itself is remarkably unchanged: stand at Isandlwana and you can understand exactly what happened there.
